My son is 2.5, some days he loves piddling around the garden with me and other days he’d rather stay inside or I also resort to bribery 😆 I am planning to make a magic runner bean tee-pee for d this year using grow bags and big bamboo stakes. Also for watering, I give mine a spray bottle! Sneakily working on fine motor skills too lol and I don’t have to worry about anything being drowned.

Spay bottle is such a good idea!! And I have thought about making a bean teepee and might just do that this year. Thanks for the reminder!!

I loved reading this! I grew up and still live in the rural South. My grandma has been gardening as long as I can remember, and I was constantly exposed to gardening and nature in general. We lived in front of woods that she would sometimes go into to gather wood and plants. My elementary school also really immersed us in gardening and farming. Most students had some relationship with either. I remember we had a garden outside of our classroom that we tended to. Later, we had a greenhouse. It was really fun and engaging. And in general, most kids like to get up from their desks anyway.

This is so inspiring! I didn’t grow up gardening, but I’ve made do on my small 8th floor balcony with some herbs and a few small planters. I can’t wait to grow my garden one day into a whole backyard with kiddos running through! What a magical childhood

What’s the name of the bird book your daughter has? My 4 year old LOVES bird watching with me, and a kids book with stickers would absolutely make his day!

Great post, I grew up in the country and we had a great shelf for mud 'pies and cakes' with different colours of soil. Maybe that's why I am a baker now and not a gardener! My children also were in the country and they are both great gardeners. I too have lived in cities all over the world but am in the country now and Really appreciate it. Tradwives...GACK.

be well.

I love the quote from Robert Brault. I will definitely use it in my community. Beautiful, thank you for your work!

My kids are 9 and 5 and like yours, have grown up in our (backyard, mostly container) garden! One way I’ve always gotten them involved is with weeding! It’s actually helpful. Haha. They’re also in charge of taking scraps to the compost bin outside. It helps them understand how magical compost is (or I hope it does, anyway)! We have a similar mud kitchen in our backyard too. They love to make “tea” with all the various stuff they find around the yard. And it actually has a working pump faucet which they love!
